Five things people don’t tell you about a long distance relationship.

As some of you may know, around late March of this year, I got into a relationship with someone I went to high school with who is still living in California (while i’m going to school in Arizona).  Let me tell you, doing long distance isn’t easy and it’s definitely not for everyone, but if you want to know they truth, I’ll tell you a few things.

  1. It brings out a persons true intentions-  Often times nowadays, I hear people saying that a boy they like only wants sex and isn’t ready to give a higher level of commitment.  However, in a long distance relationship, it revolves around that higher level of commitment.  There is so much more communication that goes into it, and it’s nearly impossible for the relationship to revolve around that physical aspect due to the fact that you’re too far away from them.
  2. It makes seeing them so much more special-  The distance will definitely help you not take your significant other for granted.  The moment you see them after being apart is one of the most uplifting experiences you’ll ever feel.  The time apart  may be hard, but the time spent together will easily make up for it.
  3. It can be expensive-  Lots of time and lots of travel.  Plane tickets, hotel rooms, gas, etc.  It all costs a lot of money, but it’s all apart of making it work.  It may not be easy saving up, but its definitely a positive incentive to want to work for that money.
  4. Mutual support and trust is key-  Being away from each other is very hard.  That’s why you constantly need to be supporting and trusting each other with what they say and do.  Distance makes “being their number one fan” so much more important, as far as academics, work and health go.  Simply put, always believe in your significant other and push them to do their best.
  5. It’s 110% worth it if it’s with the right person- At the end of the day, long distance relationships aren’t for everyone and they don’t always work out.  But if it’s with the right person, it’s worth it to put in the extra effort in order to make it last and work out in the long run.
